“Shit.” AJ slammed the freezer door shut and ripped open a cabinet. “God damn him.” He cracked the cabinet door shut and flung open another one, craning his neck to see as far into the top shelf as he possibly could. “Irresponsible little fuck.”
AJ spun around at the groggy voice, fury shooting out of his eyes. “As a matter of fact…”
Nick wiped his hand down his face, scratching his bare chest, trying to get his eyes to settle into the florescent light in the kitchen. “I was sleeping, you know.”
“Tough shit, Nick. I’m sick of you not buying stuff once we run out.”
“Oh, cuz I’m the only one who uses everything up?”
“No, because you’re the…” AJ stopped and huffed, slamming an empty mug on the counter, making Nick jump. “Look. I just want some fuckin’ coffee in the morning. Is that too much to ask?”
Nick raised one eyebrow then the other, leisurely scratching his crotch, obviously not getting the urgency of the situation. “So we’ll go to Coffee Bean, Christ. You’re such a diva lately.” Nick turned and walked back toward the hallway. “You think you’re Kevin now or something?”
As soon as it was out of his mouth, Nick knew he’d blown it. He stopped in his tracks, waiting for the firestorm of words to nail him in the back of the head, but it never came. Tentatively, he turned, almost relieved to see not anger, but sadness in AJ’s eyes. “I’m…I’m sorry. I’ll…I’ll go get us some coffee.”
But he didn’t move, the look on AJ’s face holding him hostage. “Nick…what are gonna do?” It was really more of a plea than a question, and it definitely had nothing to do with coffee.
“I dunno, Aje. I guess we just keep going.”
“Remembering what he taught us? We’ve gotta honor all he’s done for us somehow.”
AJ sighed and headed back toward the bedroom, not even stopping for his traditional kiss on the neck as he passed Nick. “Aren’t you even a little scared?”
“Yeah…right now I’m just trying to figure out why you’re so pissed at me.”
“I’m not pissed at you, I’m just…” He scrounged around in a pile of clothes tossing a shirt to Nick mumbling something about going with him to the store. Finding one for himself, he popped his head through the neck and pointed at the clothes strewn all over the floor. “We can’t even remember to do our goddamned laundry.”
“Or buy coffee.”
That pathetic truth hung in the air and Nick finally put his shirt on, sighing so heavily it was as though we was trying to huff his fear out of the room. “We’ll make it. Anytime the shit hits the fan, we always make it.”
“Yeah, with him. He always kept us together.”
“Now you know why I’m mad, not worried.” Nick slipped into a pair of sweats, waiting for AJ to do the same and grabbed his keys. “We’re just going to have to figure out how to do it without him now. Time to grow up, I guess.”
“S’ppose it’s about time, huh?”
“S’ppose it is. We do it right, we’ll make him proud.”
For the first time that morning, AJ smiled a little. “That might not be so bad.”
Nick popped AJ on the ass as he walked out the door. “Nope. And after we get the coffee, you can start making Kevin proud by doing the whites.”
“And you’re going to do what?”
“I’m goin’ back to bed, dude.” At AJ’s glare, he cackled and ducked into the truck.
“I’ll watch you do the whites?”
That wasn’t right either.
“I’ll give you a back rub after you do the whites? Or, you know…is that too much to ask?”
AJ considered that option and what would most certainly follow. Settling back into his seat, he buckled up, a cheesy grin covering his face, the laundry already forgotten.
“You know, I think I’m liking this growing up business already.”
